Name A journey to self-discovery

"Yeah well, just another trip to the Himalayas...", is something you might be thinking when you start reading the understated text. But let me warn you that this trip is more about the ideal persons than the ideal destination.

A BIT ABOUT MYSELF
I'm an undergrad senior and am traveling to Germany to complete my final year project. After submitting my dissertation, I will graduate in the fall of 2011. I'm not taking up any job as I feel that I have much to learn from reading and traveling. I hope to embark on a voyage to discover my self and the world around me. I'm aching for a trip like the one that Ernesto Guevara took with Alberto Granado, in 1952: a trip for self-discovery. By the end of this trip I hope to have made some sense off my existence, discovered my intense and fervent interests. I'm currently somewhat confused about what I want to do with my life and am cynical of humans (I sometimes think of humans as a failing species).

I'm highly flexible on the dates for this journey, but it'll have to be after I finish my research work in Germany. I've chosen the Great North of India as an ideal destinations for my travel. My reasons for the same are:-
1. Peaceful and serene, gives you ample space for discovery, pondering and reflection
2. Why India: its very cheap (well, for all white men at least !! -- as J. Clarkson would say) and with a native you'll be more accessible
3. The people are hospitable and nice (generally, but you must know how to manoeuvre some others)
4. I find mountains to be fascinating

The plan is to travel the expanse of the north of Indian (and occasional Nepalese) mountains by hiking, hitchhiking, couch-surfing and camping, with frequent stops (that wouldn't be planned). I do not plan to make this trip a lavish expense and am hopeful of surviving it with base essential means (like Thoreau, in Walden Pond).

I'm deeply influenced by the writings of Tolstoy, Thoreau, Emerson, Louis L'amour, Jack London and Jon Krakauer. I'm looking for ideal travel partners who share my interests, beliefs and outlook (except for the 'me being confused' bit).

So, I'll inform you a bit about myself: I'm absolutely interested in just about everything. Although the major of my bachelor's is engineering but I've completed research projects on such diverse fields such as sociology of technology, group-psychology, behavior science, finance and wine-tourism (along with technical papers in engineering). I like to read classics in almost all fields, except for engineering. I've recently developed a deep interest in moral philosophy, classical political philosophy and decision making science. You can start an engaging conversation with me on almost any topic, from the education system in China to hitchhiking the expanse of Siberia (but personally, I'd rather prefer hitchhiking through Patagonia). I'm also very much enjoy academic research, not only for pedantic pursuits but for quenching my curiosity.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at:
mit.rajat.kumar@gmail.com

PS: If you have any great trip ideas (say, in the Patagonia), but the purpose of the trip being the same, please ping me on my email.

Rajat Kumar Hi guys, its great to see such enthusiasm for this voyage!!
@Amanda&Bilal: we should skype soon and get to know each other better.

Also, I've started charting a course for this journey. I'm basically considering the northern and north-eastern (the seven sisterly states) parts of India. However, I'm open to any suggestions that you guys might have. It'll be great to have your views.

one last thing - as I'd mentioned in the description of this trip above, "this trip is more about the ideal persons than the ideal destination" and also, this trip will be (correction: is supposed to be) an adventure of self-discovery. I'd quote Thoreau here, "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
I guess what I'm trying to say (very simply phrased) is that, "it means a lot to me!" and I would like to know the people with whom I'd be sharing this epic event in the journey of my life. So, please share (with all of us) some more information about yourself, your likes/interests; you may post links to your blogs, fb profiles and what-have-you.

@Amanda: go clarkson. i love the fact that he's 50, yet still a child.!!
