The plan is to head to Australia for a year to work and travel around. I fly out of London on Jan 4 2012 and land in Sydney. There are no plans really for when I get there other than I want to try and see as much as I can. Stopping for a few months when I find a place I like and find some work.
For the first month my girl friend will be traveling with me, but she unfortunately has to return to the UK. For the first bit we will be trying to cover a lot of ground and see all the sights. So if anyone is just planing a short trip to Oz in Jan. it might be cool to team up for a bit. After that I'm on my own for the next 11 months.
I already have my 12 month work visa, it was really easy. If you are from Canada or the UK its as easy as getting a 3 month travel visa as long as your under 31. You can get it at this link http://www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/working-holiday.htm
You don't even have to mail them your passport.
If anyone has experience traveling around Australia (or is a planing a trip there) and has some info on getting around, or maybe some out of the way spots that I should check out if you could post to this it would really help me out, Thanks.

Lauren Hi Bryan, I'm Australian and would definitely recommend Sydney and Melbourne for your visit however they are expensive so perhaps try couchsurfing. I'll be back there in March for a wedding so if you want to meet up for a beer, that'd be great. My dad actually owns a pub, a very typical 'outback' pub near the town of Young (in between Sydney and Canberra), and there are a few jobs around the area for fruit-picking etc at certain times of the year. I haven't been up to the north, but if you like to party, then the Gold Coast would be a good stop too.

Lauren Tasmania is great for a bit more adventure as well, but might be out of your budget. And the Blue Mountains are good for hiking/caving/camping.
