Dear Travelers and adventure-seekers,
I invite you to partake in a unique challenge – independent, overland travel throughout the African continent. The journey will commence around Oct 10th, shortly after a few weeks of initial preparations in Cape Town (we arrive on Sept 23). Mode of transportation – 1999 Toyota Landcruiser, equipped with a dual battery system, inverter, all-terrain tires, mini-fridge, camping gear, etc. The preliminary itinerary will take us from S. Africa north to Ethiopia through Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and then back south through Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia finishing back in Cape Town. The duration of the trip shall be roughly 10 months, with a possibility of extension to explore the Western coast of the continent.
COSTS
In order to defray the cost of long-term car hire (mutually convenient agreement was arranged with friends) we ask that each team member contribute a fixed amount of $450 per month, which is only $15/day (a minimum of one month commitment is required). All other costs, including diesel, camping fees, food, etc will be split among all the travelers. You will not be responsible for costs associated with car maintenance. Taking into account all of these expenses this is still very much affordable for an adventure of this magnitude, especially when compared to the costs associated with buying your own car, or joining a commercial group trip.
TEAM
Like on any long-term trip, the team is a very important factor and in fact, is a key to a successful adventure. We will be spending 24/7 around each other and therefore it is essential that we are as compatible as possible. You should be flexible, open-minded, resourceful and with a healthy appetite for risk and adventure. This journey will truly be a team effort and therefore each member is expected to contribute in some way (in addition to a financial contribution). Preference will be given to someone who has a basic understanding of car mechanics, has experience driving a stick shift (on the right hand side) and intention to travel long term with a flexible itinerary.
Briefly about us: we are 30 and 32 yr old males from US and Ireland. Between us we have experience with long drives (crossing continental US in 7 days) and long trips (spending 13 months backpacking). We have contacts throughout Africa and will be visiting friends and friends of friends. And we are both extremely excited about the adventure.
If all of the above sounds appealing, please write directly to srudyak@gmail.com. Tell us a bit about yourself, your travel plans in Africa and how you’ll contribute to this adventure.
Safe travels,
Africa Overland
Still looking for flights? You can have flight experts compete against one another to find you the absolute best and cheapest flights.
pavel Sergey who wrote this post had asked me last spring to join a similar expedition that I was planning. Based on a clear agreement from Sergey I made a written commitment to buy a Land Rover and paid a deposit. A day before the payment was due Sergey personally confirmed to me and the seller of the car his enthusiasm to buy the car. Hours before the full payment was due to be made he walked away without any prior warnings or discussion of his concerns leaving me on my own to deal with the seller of the car about the deposit and commitment I made on Sergey’s and my behalf.
The cost to hire the Land Cruiser Sergey advertises is £3,500, so it is a bit unfair to say that “you will not be responsible for costs associated with car maintenance” while contributing a fixed $450 a month for 10 months and sharing the rest of the expenses. Do the math with 2 existing and 2 potential members of the team. There is nothing wrong with trying to recover costs, but the process should be transparent and fair.
