A visit to the Sahara Desert would be incomplete without a journey on camels capturing the artistic sites and colors of the desert. T he journey will be a most memorable if not the most memorable experience of your trip to the desert. You enter a place where all you hear are the footsteps of the camels as they move through the soft, brilliantly colored sand. It is an experience shared by few in the western world.
The dunes of Erg Chebbi, near the village of Merzouga are about 50KM(30 miles) southeast of Erfoud and they boast being the highest dunes in Morocco. These dunes border Les Pyramides Hotel and make staying at the hotel an ideal place to begin your camel trekking experience. These picturesque dunes rise 50M from the desert floor running north/south of the village of Merzouga and also place you within 40KM of the Algerian border.
There are Camel Trekking tour companies located right on the grounds of Les Pyramides Hotel. This means you make your reservation and stay in the hotel and there is no additional travel for you to take advantage of these lovely tours. The hotel personnel will assist you in setting up and creating the tour that works best for your time in the desert.
Tours can be set up to either take you for one night riding the camels to a nomadic camp where you may sleep in a comfortable tent with mattressing or move your mattressing outside the tent and sleep under the stars. You will taste and share a traditional Berber meal and afterward enjoy drumming and songs giving you a feel of the rich Berber culture. if your schedule allows more time in the desert, then you may elect to experience a camel trek for 3-5 nights which enables you to travel further into, the desert all while experiencing nomadic life and culture, food and way of life. If you prefer less time in the desert because of travel constraints, a sunset camel trek allows you the opportunity to see and experience the ever changing sounds, colors and sites of the desert for an evening.
All the treks are with guides who grew up living a nomadic life and thus bring much history, tales and riddles for your enrichment. The guides also, speak fluently a variety of languages such as: English, French, Italian,, Arabic, Spanish and more all which make the treks an even more incredible, rich rewarding journey.
