Hike / camp / white-water raft / jet-ski (here - http://g.co/maps/ybqkb) etc. over a week or so. Total drive time is 34 hours, which I think is already very reasonable for 2/3 people to drive over 7-9 days, but can be reduced further by cutting destinations. (For instance, leaving out Glen Canyon will cut time significantly).

We'd fly to Denver, rent a car, make a loop back to Denver covering 4-6 national parks.

I've done 3 such drive+hike trips with great success last year. I'm just a graduate student doing this on my own, so I'm just looking to split my car rental, and lodging expenses!

trailsnet You might want to check out the "Biking the Heart of the Rockies" trip to Glenwood Springs that will be taking place during the same time as your trip. It's in Colorado. You could take the Amtrak to Glenwood Springs, then rent a car from there. Even though it is being billed as a biking trip, some of the participants will be hiking instead. There are many good hikes but one fabulous one to Hanging Lake.
