I really want to travel to Alaska or someplace in Canada to be able to see the northern lights. My plan is to stay at low budget hotels, or hostels.

I'm flexible with dates but nature is not, so the trip dates must be reasonable with the best time to see the aurora.

On the trip, to see the aurora, it will be necessary to include camping time.

You need to like cold, dark, and long nights!

Mani Plan on going to Whitehorse Yukon. Make it early winter or late winter as it increases your chance of seeing Northern Lights exponentially. If you have time look for volunteering positions with Dog sled companies as they provide free boarding and lodging
