Map of Burundi

Burundi is a landlocked country in East Africa, bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. The nation covers an area of 27,830 square kilometers (10,745 square miles) and has a population of over 11 million people. The capital city is Bujumbura.

Burundi is situated on a high plateau in the Great Rift Valley. Much of the country is hilly or mountainous, with several peaks exceeding 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) in height. The climate is tropical, with two rainy seasons (March to May and September to November). The landscape is lush and green, with rivers, lakes, and waterfalls dotting the countryside.

Burundi is home to two major ethnic groups: the Hutu and the Tutsi. Traditionally, the Tutsi were considered to be the ruling class while the Hutu were farmers. However, this division began to break down in the 20th century as Burundi gained independence from colonial rule. Today, there is still some tension between these two groups, although it has largely been resolved through peaceful means.
