Laos is a mountainous country with dense forests and many rivers. The Mekong River flows through the center of the country and is an important source of water for irrigation and transportation. The climate in Laos is tropical, with two distinct seasons: the rainy season from May to October, and the dry season from November to April.

The Lao people make up the majority of the population and are ethnically related to the Thai people. Other minority groups include the Hmong, Khmu, Tai Lue, and Vietnamese. Theravada Buddhism is the dominant religion in Laos and most Lao people follow Buddhist traditions and beliefs.
