Mongolia by Bicycle - Group Travel

A 2500 km, human-powered expedition via bicycle, packraft, and foot across Northern Mongolia into the Altai region of Siberia. After arriving in the capital of Ulaanbaatar our team will spend between 2 and 3 days extending our Mongolian visas beyond the normal 30-day limit for tourists and arranging for transport out of the city to begin the trek in the town of Erdenet. We will cross open country by bicycle west by northwest 1900 km to the Russian border in the Altai mountain region of Siberia. The route has been determined to cross as many protected areas as reasonably possible within the east to west traverse of northern Mongolia. There will be no motorized vehicle support for this portion of the journey and the team will generally be carrying about a week's worth of food rations on any given leg. We will record each visit to a protected area with video and still imagery, conduct interviews with officials when possible, and document current practices for responsible land use including permit enforcement. The remaining 600 km of the human-powered part of the journey will be over asphalt in the Altai mountains of Russia where the team will, schedule permitting, make an excursion by foot into Shavlinskiy Zakaznik National Park.
