DIY or Package Deal

Saving money is always a major consideration when it comes to buying or booking anything. Whether it’s a new car, finding cheaper insurance, food shopping, basically anything, if you can save money then you’re always going to be happier as a result.

Holiday shopping is exactly the same, and booking a great deal will give you a boost of energy, allowing you to look forward to your time away without having to worry so much about how to pay for it. Saving at this point will also give you more to spend whilst you’re away.

This brings to mind the argument of whether booking your holiday DIY is cheaper than a package deal. Now personally I think it totally depends on the situation, e.g. how many people are travelling, where you’re traveling from, where you’re traveling to, and often comes down to being in the right place at the right time. Package holidays can be total bargains if you happen to stumble upon a deal and you find you fit all the criteria, e.g. based on two or four people sharing, you’re able to fly from that particular airport, on those particular dates, but this isn’t always the case.

This is why I find booking DIY often easier and cheaper. The beauty of this kind of process is that you can find many different bargains and piece them together to form a truly cost-saving holiday to suit you completely.

Here you’re looking at even more money saved, which as we mentioned before, is certainly the aim of the game. If you can drive, I’d certainly recommend this extra. I regularly use parking at Stansted, and now wouldn’t travel without adding it onto my holiday. Check out what’s available from your departure airport.

Saving money on how you get to the airport is a great starting point, but you obviously need to work this around your flight, which is usually where the biggest cost is involved. The best place to find a cheap flight is online, and I always use Skyscanner. Don’t be afraid to travel indirect if this comes up considerably cheaper, and maybe look at travelling from a different airport to the one you’d normally use, and drive there, parking up as we mentioned before.

When you find your deal, watch the price for a day or two, see if it comes down, and when you’re happy – book!
Accommodation is a similar game, but one with more choice. You’ll find countless websites offering cheap accommodation, such as Travel Republic, Sunshine, Alpha Rooms, On The Beach etc, so it’s really a case of shopping around.

Write a list of your needs, such as close to town centre, pool, all inclusive etc, and then get to work on finding your ideal base. For further tips on the merits of DIY or package deals the Mirror web site offers a great read on this subject.

The final thing you need to look for to make up your DIY booking holiday is a transfer. Shuttle transfers are the cheapest option, and you can book these online, however if there are several of you travelling, consider a private transfer and split the cost between you. DIY or package? The choice is yours, however for me, I much prefer the freedom of booking it all myself.

  1. I agree, DIY is much more fun and also a certain sense of reward because you created your own bespoke travel itinerary. With loads of great travel and online website offering great bargains its quite easy to find best rate without the help of a travel agent. Skyscanner is great for capturing flights everywhere at the best price – I love their function of select ‘anywhere’ great for on a whim travel and is a great hotel site – usually beats its competitors on price and offers a great sign-up of 25$ off first booking. A bit of time and research and DIY is truly a rewarding way to travel.

  2. My sister and I are looking to plan our first ever trip to America and have chosen New York, but can’t decide whether to go through a travel agent or DIY. We’ve both been abroad on separate occasions, though only to other European countries and hardly ever by aeroplane, so we’re used to travelling but those trips were all package deals and organised through school so we only had to pay and turn up on the day! I guess DIY could work out cheaper but because neither of us has been to America before I’d be scared of forgetting something important such as organising visas or booking the wrong flight! Do you have any advice for first time USA travellers? Thank you!
