Solo Travel

When you’re first afflicted with the travel bug, your trips seem dominated by transport, sleeping arrangements and destinations. But as the bug spreads, as it firmly takes hold, you quickly realise that the lifeblood of travel is much simpler; it’s about the experience. And that experience isn’t driven by flight paths or landmarks or hotels; it’s driven by people, especially the people you enjoy your journey with.

That brings us to an age-old question: who should you travel with? Is it best to travel solo, travel with mates, or travel with complete strangers? Here are a few thoughts on each…

  1. I have travelled solo, with mates and also with complete strangers. However, I prefer travelling solo most of the times.

  2. Believe it or not, I’ve done all. Well, with strangers only after meeting them once already at my destination. It’s been all good, except for one instance in which I traveled with a best friend. I quickly realized she was not as adventurous as me and ended up doing things on our own for most of time. Pity. We’re still best friends, but realized we really can’t travel together, at least not in certain situations. I think it all depends on the circumstance. It’s good to be flexible, but I also think it’s an EYE-OPENING experience about yourself and your travel mate.

  3. I think it’s great to travel in all the ways; along, with a partner, friends or family. It really just depends on what type of trip you’re looking for. Personally, I need a solo trip every now and then just to get myself centered again but I have so many fabulous memories from the times I traveled with my boyfriend, friends and family.
