1/8/12 UPDATE: My trip got delayed to July, but still on track. I now have a better idea of what the trip may entail and what it may look like, but I'm still flexible with locations and timing. I'm glad I joined this site and have already connected with some of great people here. If anyone else is interested let me know.
---
I'm 35, live in California and have been working too much for too long to build a career, a name for myself and to secure my future, only to realize that I had forgotten to live my life today. I'm ready for the experience of a lifetime. I don't yet have any specific plans and haven't done a lot of research, but I'm hoping to find someone with similar interests that wants to plan this with me. I rather not do this on my own as the best memories are those you can share with someone for years. I'm very flexible and time and money are not an issue (to a certain degree). I welcome all ideas, tips and advice as I've never attempted anything remotely similar. I'd love to find someone to go with from start to finish, but I'm also interested in meeting other world travelers for legs of the trip. Let me know what you guys think.

Alobar00
Alobar00 Hi Damien. My situation is similar to yours. I'm 29 and have been working constantly since graduation. I want to give a 1-year break before taking the next step. I plan starting in New Zealand, travelling Australia and Pacific islands, heading to South east Asia over Indonesia, then India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran and Turkey at the end. Not sure how long this would take. I didn't make any plans yet.

Lauren
Lauren Hey Damian, wow that's a lotta countries for 12 months! Will you be doing the trip on a budget (i.e. backpacking, hostels, couchsurfing) or more luxurious? And are you wanting to plan it all out before you jet off or just have a general plan and be able to stay longer/shorter in places when get there? I'm not sure where I'll be in the world, probably Australia, Chile or Canada in Mar'12, it would be great to meet up for a beer/coffee. What's your rough plan? Which continent first? Cheers

Todd
Todd We got "stuck" in India for 5 months straight :) So yeah, lots of countries. But I'm sure it would be a blast too. Highly recommend India, Egypt and Peru from that list. Australia is pretty expensive, but a good wind-down from the culture shock of Asia and elsewhere.

Damian

Damian Yea, I know I won't make it to all those countries in one year. That's my dream list. I don't want to rush, so even if I get to half the list I'll be happy. Todd, when you say 'stuck,' do you mean not by choice? Ouch. I'd like to hear that story.
Lauren, I want to do a little bit of everything. My plan is to stay in some nice hotels in key destination. Backpack, coach surf and hosteling for legs of the trip, get a car and road trip for other parts of the trip. I don't have anything planned yet, but I don't want to have a set itinerary. I'll figure it out as I go. Not sure yet if I want to start in South America or Australia. I want to leave Europe for last.

Todd
Todd Hey Damian, no, I meant stuck as in we loved it so much that we didn't leave until our visas expired. There was adventure around every corner, as long as you keep away from the tourist hotspots. It's very easy to get off the tourist path in India. We only ran into too many tourists once we hit Goa.

Damian
Damian Ok, that sounds much better now. Yea, I want to do a little of both. Some key tourist traps, but mostly out and about mingling with the locals and being exposed to the culture. I just started planning and have a million questions. Maybe I can run some by you and Lauren once I can get them all compiled. You guys seem to have a lot of experience in this.

Lauren Give us a call whenever you like, my skype name is globetrooperlauren. My first piece of advice if you don't already have it, is get skype :) And be careful of Australia. It's big and expensive = budget blown for a lot of ppl.

Matthew Hunt in your trip don't forget the treasurers close to home. have you ever been to my home state Kentucky? we have the mammoth cave, land between the lakes, swamps, mountains, and one of the deepest rivers in the world.

Damian
Damian Matthew, you are absolutely right. My idea is to do the US later on in life. On a bike or RV. I know, complete opposites. I think it will depend on my age, haha.

Damian
Damian Hi! When are you planning to start? I will start in central and south America moving east then through French Polynesia, and Australia so it be be a little while before I get to SE Asia. I don't have all the details, but I know I want to visit Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore. Then move towards China and Japan.
Ludmila
Ludmila Hi, tentatively in August next year. I plan to start from Central Asia (Tadjikistan or Uzbekistan) moving eastwards covering almost every country and fly to South America from Hong Kong or smth. Thailand, Vientnam are on the list as well. I though plan to skip Australia and Polinesia due to visa implications.

Damian What kind of visa implications? Trying to figure out if there's something I should know.

nativeguy
nativeguy Hey Bro, I'm totally into this idea of yours. I feel the same way. I think if you wouldn't mind having me along I'd like to go all the way with you (no homo) man. I'm down for the long run. I really need this in my life. I need the memories. So, Hit me up with any questions. One thing though. My budget for a trip like this would be less than ten grand. I don't know if that would be a problem.

Damian
Damian Hi Native Guy, thanks for the note. Let's chat and see how are plans match. Not sure yet, but I think my trip will be delayed for a few months to the middle of the year (June/July). I'll send you private message with my info so we can chat.

Bryan
Bryan hey I recently found a web page you might like its oneworld.com you can pick flights that take you around the world choosing up to 16 stops. Im heading to Austeralia for a year to work and travel. We should meet up for a beer if you get there. Also for cheep flights around Europe check out easyjet.com and ryanair.com or better get a euro-rail pass be fore you leave home.

Damian
Damian Hi Bryan, thanks for the tips. I was aware of oneworld, but not the other two. I'm debating on whether to get the europass or buy a car somewhere in Europe and sell it at the end of the trip. Send me a message with your info when you have a chance. It'd be great to meet up.

Ian [EagerExistence]
Ian [EagerExistence] damo, you only need skyscanner.net, it hooks into many airlines like easyjet & ryanair. be warned though, budget airlines charge for check-in, so try and carry-on.
