Name The Paddling Poms Murray River Kayak Expedition 2013.

In 2013 we are setting off for Australia and undertaking a massive challenge. We will be kayaking the full length of the Murray river.

The mighty Murray river is the third longest navigable river in the world crossing the states of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia and totals at around 2756 kilometres.

The beginning phase of the expedition will be by foot, hiking to the source of the river in the Australian Alps, only 40 km away from Australia's highest mountain, Mt Kosciusko.

Once this phase of the expedition is complete and we reach water suitable enough we will make our way along the river in Kayaks, this is how we plan to travel the remainder of the journey to the mouth of the river at the Southern Ocean.

This expedition is in aid of charity and we expect a lot of coverage to be floating about. We have already appeared in news papers and we hope to get on the news at some point. The aim is to raise £5000 so we need as much publicity as possible.

We are looking for people that may want to join us for as little or as much as they want of the journey.

Also being that we are both English it would be great to get some support from people that live closer to the river. One of the problems we are faced with is actually getting from the airport to the source of the river.

Fly a message my way if you are interested or think you can help,

John Merton G'day, I may ask to join part of your trip later in the year but up till then maybe I could help with information here and there.I live in Victoria was was thinking about joining this club http://www.rmboa.org.au/. for are Murray river ramble. Their river calculator is excellant and I feel sure if you contacted them they'd very helpful. If you are going to camp along the river keep to the Victorian side-no campfires on the NSW side.Do you have many people interested in the trip? I'm sure you'll have a great time. John Merton

xistinchaos
xistinchaos Hi Charlie, I am definitely interested! I am heading to the Gobi for the Gobi Crossing 2011 in a months time and this sounds like the next thing I'd like to do. I am an experienced amateur kayaker and can get access to practice here in Pune, India, where I live. Will we encounter a lot of rapids as we float downstream?

Trinkets
Trinkets Hi Charlie, it's a great trip! I'm familiar with the South Australian section, especially around Renmark and regularly paddle / camp the backwaters and creeks. Happy to join you when you make it to there... You might find some info at http://www.mcc.canoe.org.au/ too. Water is still nice and high after northern rains so the flow is good and predicted to hold. Good luck with your plans!
