I was born and raised in San Francisco, and even though I love life in the city, I've always felt more at home in nature. I left my desk job four years ago to travel by train, exploring and living on ranches in the Southwest. I love working with livestock and being around animals, and became an accidental goat expert.
I've since come back to SF, where I managed a goat herd (yes, you heard that right), and interned with a sustainable French butcher shop. It's been nice to be back home for a bit, but it's time to hit the road again!
This March (2012), I'll be going to Mexico for a week of traditional cooking classes, then off to Washington to work on a cattle ranch through the summer. After that, my idea is to travel to the east coast and do some Appalachian Trail investigating. There's a five-day preparation course I'd like to take in Sept., and then (assuming that goes well) stick around to volunteer doing some trail maintenance. After that, who knows? Somewhere warm for the winter?
I would love to combine my love of traveling and farming by, well, doing both! That is, traveling to farms all around the world, living and working with them and learning about different agricultural traditions (WWOOF is a great program that will be a big help doing this).
Hiking the Appalachian Trail is high on my list of things to do, as is visiting Peru and hiking the Inca Trail. New Zealand and Costa Rica are also places I'd like to visit soon, possibly living on farms at least part of the time.
