Diego I'm heading to China, starting in Beijing in Oct 4th. We should be able to match Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.. I"ll be heading back to Madrid afterwards.. What cities/activities/sites do you have in mind?

chester Im in Beijing now and will take the train to Shanghai on Sept 22 and will be back on the 25th or 26th. Not sure where to go next. Maybe Xian, Dalian, or Mongolia

Diego i'll be in China probably until the end of October. Tentative schedule, Beijing from the 4th - 10th, take an overnight train to Xi'an 11th - 13th, take a train to Huashan for one or two days and get to Shanghai to see the World Fair and some of the classic. That will be another 5 to 6 days and head down to HK.. I'll be doing most of my trip by train (just quit my job an di'm in the middle of a nice transition... no time pressure).. I'm working on the final details of the itinerary this week, I should have it ready by Friday.. Let me know what you think.. Also if you have other recommendations, tips, etc.

irish_paul I'll probably get to Shanghai around the time you're in HK...I am actually going to HK in one week but then I go to Japan and then Beijing and down through China, the last place I will be in China is Yangshuo near Guilin. After that I will go to Hanoi to begin Southeast Asia route....So maybe we will cross paths in Yangshuo or Hanoi more probably....

hi, we're a Singaporean couple in the 30s. as we are short on time this trip, we are getting local central asia agents to help us arrange the following trip and are looking for folks to join us. the details as follow...

Trip: starting around mid-Aug, from Tashkent
Places:
- Uzbekistan (4 days): Bakhara and Samarkand

- Tajikistan (abt 7days): Samarkand -> Pendjikent -> Dushanbe -> Khorag -> Murghab
(via Wakhan corridor n visits to Afghan Bazaar)

- Kyrgyzstan (2 days): Murghab -> Kyzyl-Art Pass -> Sary Tash -> Irkeshtam Pass -> Kashgar

- China (abt 10 days): Kashgar -> Karakul Lake -> Yarkend -> Khotan -> Urumqi -> Turpan -> Urumqi -> Home
(incl Taklimakan Camel/Desert trek from Khotan)

chester I'm also thinking of going on a trip to Xinjiang (Kashgar -> Karakul Lake -> Yarkend -> Khotan -> Urumqi -> Turpan -> Urumqi etc) but not until October :(

Lauren What makes this hike so dangerous mpreihs? I've read the tallest peak in the five sacred mountains is only 2,160m, so altitude wouldn't be a big risk factor... Why no safety equipment?

mpreihs I think the fact that no advanced equipment is needed and few have skills honed through experience. Instead, you have a sort of public trail used by many who are foolish enough to give it a try regardless of their physical ability or previous climbing experience. Sheer drop-offs are just inches away on certain parts of the trail. There are also near vertical steps that seem to go on forever. The Chinese seem to have increased the safety standards for the hike but many still get hurt.

Todd I just went looking for pictures to add to the trip and it really does look quite dangerous. Will have to keep it in mind if we get the chance to visit China next year.
