inguvap hi, can you tell me where you are starting from? How do you prepare for the trip? I have this bug in my mind and I want to do it in 2012 too. I live in NJ. I am a female of age 41, fairly decent shape but nowhere near where I need to be for this trip.

Lauren Hi inguvap, we did a few years ago. As for preparation, it's best to walk for long periods with our trekking boots and with a backpack. It's really not that difficult, but the more prepared, the more you'll enjoy it. People who arrive unprepared may still make it to the top, but it will be much less enjoyable if they're constantly at the back of the group and pushed to their limit.

Your feet are most important, which is why it's especially helpful to wear your hiking boots when you're training at home. Not when you're running, but for any long walks. If you get bad blisters on the trek, it can really make life hard. So by wearing your boots at home, it will get you used to them.

inguvap I bought 2 pairs of Vibram 5 fingers KSO Trek. I hope to use them for my trip. Do you have any idea whether they will be good enough? Also, how many hrs of walking would you recommend? I can workout for 21/2hrs in a day but not continuously. I can run 5 miles in intervals, can walk nonstop for 11/2 hrs at 4mph. Never tried hilly areas but will start now. Thanks for your response.

Lauren Depends how used to 5 fingers you are. There's no ankle support, which could be an issue on such rough terrain. Maybe contact the tour operator you plan on using and ask them what they think. It can be very rocky terrain, so the under sole needs to be tough too. But of course the porters mostly trek with old running shoes or old boots donated by clients. As for training, anything helps, and the more the better :) We only ran a couple of kms every few days. Would have been better for us to do more, but we were working too much.
