I too am considering a trip to Brasil, and would love to experience Carnival!! My time span is likely to be more like 2-3 weeks, but that isn't to say our journeys couldn't combine for a while and part ways when the time comes - particularly if more folks end up going as well. I'd love to do some hiking as well, and of course spend some time at the beach. Hostels would also be my preference, I know they are a great resource for meeting other travelers. Keep me posted on the evolution of your trip plans!
