Rp I contacted the China’s embassy a while ago. So I know that driving through China especially driving inter province require many permits and a lot of paperwork. It takes at least 4 month because all the paperwork is processed in Beijing. A possible route is to enter at Torugart pass or Irkeshtam pass drive on the Old Silk road and exit at Mengla into Laos.

Rp I am from Hungary and I find your plan intereting. I wanted to drive from Hungary to Thailand. I did some research on the route. Obviously for you there will be no problem driving through EU. I wonder why would you go to Bulgaria if you choose the Northern route? Ukraine is no problem either I travel there often. China however is a big problem. Our driver's licence is not valid there. We have to get a temporary driver's licence which is a big pain in the ass. The other problem is that most of the road sign are in Chinese same as good GPS-s. Only garmin has one where you can pinjin. To overcome the obstacle it is always better to have some official looking "sanction" on the trip. Like a TV cooking adventure or a donaton a world peace etc. I like to cook myself so we can put togather a cook through 3 continent type of jouney.

Erwin Yes I did, but you have to pass kurdish territiry and my government (and insurance! :) ) don't cover that area... You'll have to cross Turkmenistan or Tadjikistan too and those countries are not so safe I think. Kazachstan and Mongolia look safer, but the disadvantage is that you cannot traverse them in winter, it's just too cold then!
