Zoracle

I am a Traveler. I travel all over the US for work and then take one 6 week backpacking trip a year. Although I'm pretty laid back, I'm a high energy traveler and feel most fulfilled when I'm on the move experiencing everything. It takes many days before I feel the need to take a breather and relax on a beach or in a mud spa; typically I'll plan these in. :)

Zoracle How do you unfollow a trip? I just got back from summitting Kilimanjaro and although I made it, high altitude does NOT agree with my body's naturally low saturation rate, so I am out for Everest.
Lauren
Lauren Hey Zoracle, congrats on conquering Kili. To unfollow a trip just go to your profile page (green button at the top of any page when you're signed in), click on 'Trips' in the left side bar, and then a list of all the trips you are confirmed on and following are there and you can remove yourself from them. Btw, did you take any altitude pills?

Zoracle THanks, it was tough. I didn't bring any with me, but by the 5th day I took someone else's diamox. I only took one for the next 3 days, but it really helped me sleep. without them, I woke up every 5 minutes taking deep breaths. The diamox made my body breath faster naturally, so i could sleep.

Zoracle Okay, all is booked, if anyone else would like to join, please let me know and I can add on. The climb begins on Jan 13th, summitting on the 20th during the full moon. I'm going along the Lemosho Trail with Zara Tours for about $1900. I think the price goes down if we add more people though, so let me know.
Todd
Todd Hi guys. We're getting more and more spam from tour operators on here, which in one respect can be helpful, but we're worried if we allow one tour operator, then it will open the flood gates. Anyway, if there are a couple/few of you interested to climb Kili this season, let me know and maybe we can work on getting you a Globetrooper discount. Maybe in return for a couple of guest blog posts afterwards on GT they'll give you a significant discount. Just a thought. So if anyone's interested, make it know so we can get rough numbers, then if you have any operators in mind, we can contact them on behalf of GT and offer them some exposure in exchange for a discount.

Zoracle Hey, Todd, this sounds great. I was thinking of going through Zara Tours or Team Kilimanjaro but was leaning towards Zara Tours just because they have some good package deals. Let me know what you can come up with. I plan to book this week. Thanks!

Zoracle I'm finally ready to book the climb and airfare. You get a discount for booking in groups. Is there anyone else def interested in going? If so, feel free to post here or call live: 323-481-9033
Zoracle
Zoracle I'm in the same boat as many. I'd love to get up there and definitely could get in the physical shape needed, but it's the money part that would be tough. Still, i want to keep the idea open and hear what others have to say
Skylar Givens
Skylar Givens I'm considering climbing Kili if the timing works with my Aconcagua plans. I'm comfortable climbing without a guide and hiring local porters. Do you plan to hire a guide?
Todd
Todd I may be wrong, but from memory, you have to have an approved guide on Kili. Most of the guiding companies will do bare-bones trips with a single guide and very limited supplies. Try teamkilimanjaro.com if interested.

Zoracle yes, you definitely have to have a guide on Kili and I am planning on getting one, just figuring out what dates work best still

Skylar Givens
Skylar Givens You're right. From SummitPost: "To help the economy guides and porters are required on the mountain" http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/150202/kilimanjaro.html Apparently hiring all of the guides and porters for an expedition costs 1000 or less.

Lauren Hey guys, if you haven't seen already, you can win a trip for 2 to Kilimanjaro here: http://www.polarmax.com/lodge/kilimanjaro You must be a resident of the States though.

Jebbert
Jebbert what does this cost cover? Is it just a cost for food and what not when climbing?
Zoracle
Zoracle the cost covers everything for climbing Kili: guides, food, porters, camp gear. Only thing it doesn't cover is things like your own cold weather kit and what not.

Jebbert
Jebbert Well there is a few more trips I am considering around this time, but this would definitely be the most affordable for me right now. When do you need confirmation on whether I can do it?

Lauren
Lauren Hey Zoracle, if you haven't read it already, check out our latest blog post on unknown tips for climbing Kili: http://globetrooper.com/notes/climbing-mount-kilimanjaro-tips/ Hope it helps in your planning!
Todd
Todd Also, TK has a list of people departing on various dates. Looks like they have a few groups aiming for that full moon on Jan 19th. Se the list here http://www.teamkilimanjaro.com/dates.html

Zoracle Todd, I was hoping to take the Lemosho or Machame trails. It seems they only have Rongai at that time. Lauren, I already read that blog post, it was uber useful! thanks!

Todd
Todd You could ask them to put up a trip for you in hope of attracting others. That's what we had to do because we were working jobs and had a tight schedule. You'll love it whatever you do. If you want to be really adventurous, you could camp in the crater.

Todd
Todd Hey Zoracle, I asked TK about full moon climbs in January (just out of curiosity) and they said it can get very busy on Machame at that time. They said Lemosho can also bottle neck at Barranco camp. They offer a varient of Lemosho that bypasses Barranco. Just passing on the info: the talk in depth about it here: http://www.teamkilimanjaro.com/best-kilimanjaro-route.html Hope that helps.
