The Republic of South Sudan is a landlocked country located in East-Central Africa. It is bordered by Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the south, Uganda to the southwest, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The country covers an area of 619,745 square kilometers (239,285 square miles), making it slightly smaller than Texas. The capital city is Juba, which is located in the southern part of the country.

South Sudan is a diverse country with a variety of different topographical features. The White Nile flows through the country from north to south, and is joined by the Blue Nile near Juba. To the east of the White Nile are a series of plateaus and hills, while to the west are grassy plains. There are also swampy areas in the south near Lake Turkana. The climate in South Sudan varies depending on location, but generally speaking it is tropical with hot weather year-round.
