Bulgaria is a landlocked country in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and North Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. Bulgaria covers an area of 110,994 square kilometers (42,855 square miles) and has a population of about 7 million people. The capital and largest city is Sofia.

Bulgaria is a diverse country with several distinct geographical regions. The northeastern part of the country is occupied by the Danubian Plain, which is traversed by the Danube River. The Balkan Mountains run through the middle of the country, while the Rhodope Mountains are located in the south. Bulgaria also has a coastline on the Black Sea.

The culture of Bulgaria has been shaped by its location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Thracian, Slavic, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Soviet influences can be seen in Bulgarian art, architecture, music, and cuisine. Bulgaria is also home to a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Rila Monastery and the Old Town of Nesebar.
