Climb Mt Everest: the Mother of the Himalaya

Mt Everest is the tallest peak on Earth (8,848m) and the tallest of the Seven Summits. It represents one of life's great challenges: to climb to the roof of our planet.

Mt Everest

In a technical sense, a climb of Mt Everest is moderately easy. It requires some glacier travel, basic fixed rope travel, and scaling ladders in mountaineering boots, but all of this is a "walk in the park" at sea level. It's the altitude that makes a climb of Mt Everest a dangerous proposition.

The Altitude

Altitude noticeably affects the human body at a little over 3,000m. More specifically, it's the thinning of the atmosphere and the lower concentration of oxygen in the air that affects us physically and mentally. We feel exhaustion after only small movements and find it more difficult to solve simple problems.

At 7,000m, the altitude becomes crippling. Our heartbeats race at rest, our heads throb with pain, and menial tasks dominate our existence. At 8,000m, the countdown begins. The body can no longer replenish its reserves as fast as it consumes them. Without descent, death is certainly imminent.

At 8,848m, Mt Everest exposes climbers to the deleterious effects of altitude for many hours. The key to a successful climb, in addition to regular mountain safety, is to spend as little time above 7,000m as possible. Longer exposure means less capability. And less capability means less likelihood of returning to Base Camp alive.

Stay tuned as we update this Experience with information to help amateur adventurers scale the Mother of the Himalaya.
