The Marshall Islands are a group of atolls and reefs in the central Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and the Philippines. The Marshalls are part of Micronesia, a region that also includes the Caroline Islands, Gilbert Islands, Mariana Islands, and Kiribati. The Marshalls consist of 29 atolls and five isolated islands, which are divided into two groups: the Ratak Chain and the Ralik Chain. The capital of the Marshalls is Majuro, which is located on the island of Majuro Atoll in the Ratak Chain. The Marshall Islands have a total land area of 181 square miles (470 square kilometers), making them one of the smallest countries in the world.
