Map of South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands
The South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands are located in the southern Atlantic Ocean. The islands are about 1,000 miles east of the Falkland Islands and about 500 miles north of Antarctica. The South Georgia island is the largest in the group and is home to the capital city of Grytviken. The territory also includes several smaller islands, such as Bird Island, Newman Island, and Cook Island.
The islands have a cool, humid climate and are mostly covered in glaciers and ice caps. Despite their remote location, the islands are home to a variety of plant and animal life. For example, there are over 150 species of birds, including penguins, albatrosses, and petrels. In addition, the waters around the islands are teeming with marine life, such as seals, sea lions, whales, and fish.
The South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands are also home to a small human population. Most of the residents live in Grytviken and work in fishing or tourism. There is also a small military presence on the islands.
